IBM PS/2 Thinkpad 700c

Manufacturer: IBM
Machine Type: PS/2 Thinkpad 700C
Model Number: 9552-30B
Serial Number: 97-H9NK5
Current Status: Complete and working. Defective battery.
Acquired: Dec 2000
Remarks:
This laptop, being announced around 1992, does not quite fulfill the 10year qualifications for an antique computer, but does have the classic Microchannel architecture. It has a 486SLC2 25/50Mhz CPU and a socket for a 387 mathco. 8 meg of memory is standard, with this model upgraded to the maximum of 16meg via ICDRAM cards. The hard drive is a 120meg ESDI type. Even though it is a standard 2.5 inch form factor and looks like an IDE drive, IDE is not supported in this computer. Only the ESDI drive can be used with no known exceptions. The LCD is a nice 10.4 inch TFT display with a resolution of 640x480x256. The laptop uses a NIMH battery which unfortunately is defective and the A/C adaptor used is the same one used in the later 360 and 75x series 486 Thinkpads. While this is a nice functioning laptop, the most glaring omission from this 700c model is no PCMCIA slots which means only devices can be plugged into the back or into an appropriate port replicator. This particular thinkpad runs Warp connect without the networking components just fine and fit onto the 120 meg hard drive with about 40meg to spare. Performace is pleasing considering the CPU power. Windows 3.1 is also compatible as well as taking up less space. Windows 95 is not recommended since it would run slower than any other operating system as well as require more space than the entire hard drive.
