IBM PS/2 Model 56

IBM PS/2 Model 56

Manufacturer: IBM
Machine Type: PS/2 Model 56
Model Number: 9556-DEB
Serial Number: 23LGDXW
Current Status: Excellent. Complete and working
Acquired: Jul 1999
Remarks:
Even though this machine is not quite a classic yet, it is included due to the classic MCA architecture. This PS/2 is a 9556, part of the premium IBM line and implements a IML partition, which includes the BIOS (setup utility) on a protected partition on the hard drive rather than requiring the use of a reference disk that the 85xx series needed. This computer was designed for governmental use, so the case is a full wraparound type, even covering the bottom of the computer and also uses a security switch which prevents the computer from powering on if the cover is removed. The CPU is a 486SLC type which unfortunately limits the memory to 16meg maximum and there is one drive bay available. This computer has been loaded with OS/2 version 4 and is internet and network ready. Current configuration of the machine follows:

486SLC-3
270 meg SCSI drive
3com NIC
