Manufacturer: IBM
Machine Type: PS/2 L40SX
Model Number: 8543-044
Serial Number: 23-CYF08
Current Status: Works, but bad hard file.
Acquired: Sept 1999
Remarks:
This laptop is basically a pre-Thinkpad Thinkpad. Introduced in 1992, it has a 386sx-16 CPU, 2 meg of memory and an 80 meg hard drive as well as a monchrome VGA screen. Power management was a standard feature as was the 1.44 floppy drive which is a standard form factor that was used in the later black Thinkpad models. The L40SX even has temperature and humidity sensors that will prevent operation until the machine can acclimate to room temperature. Even though this machine works, there are several issues that need to be addressed. The Nicad battery is long dead and the charger is missing. It can be powered with a car battery, but the potential for system damage makes it risky. The access door over the I/O ports is missing and more importantly, the 80 meg hard drive posts a 1701 and the computer will not recognize a replacement hard drive. There is a possibility that the hard drive controller is defective, but will be proven later when a known working hard drive is tested.
