Manufacturer: Compaq
Machine Type: Portable III
Model Number: 2660
Serial Number: 1801AL2B0361
Current Status: Good condition, but has memory fault
Acquired: Dec 1999
Remarks:
This portable was acquired for less than $5. It is an AT compatible computer in a lunchbox form factor. It uses an 80286 CPU at 12 mhz and has 640k of memory, expandable to over 6 meg with the memory expansion card. Two drive bays are on the right side of the computer which contain a 1.2M 5.25 floppy drive and a 20meg hard drive. A 1.44 floppy was an option. There is another expansion bay beside the drives for the memory expansion card and modem. There is also an attachment point on the back of the computer for a 2 slot ISA expansion box. The portable III runs on AC power only and uses a gas plasma display which tilts up after the keyboard hinges down. The computer functions well except there is some video distortion in the middle of the screen which appears to be a connection fault, and the case is damaged slightly on one corner due to possibly being dropped. Future restoration plans include expanding the memory and addressing the video fault. Recently, the computer has booted with parity errors. Most likely a faulty memory chip has developed.
