Manufacturer: Apple Computer
Machine Type: Apple ///
Model Number: A3S1-025034
Serial Number:
Current Status: Complete and working
Acquired: April 1999
Remarks:
This machine was purchased at a radio rally for $15 which included the 5mb Profile hard drive (model A9M0005, S/N 152061) and a box of system disks and owner's manuals of which I can make copies of by special request. Apple ///'s had a reputation of poor quality and/or many failures although this model boots up fine. It is shown with the correct Apple /// monitor showing a picture of the system demonstration program. The monitor itself has no discoloration whereas the cpu has moderate discoloration and the ProFile is a different colour altogether! The /// has the ability to run limited Apple ][ emulation. There is also a Titan ///+//e emulation card installed which supposedly allows 128k Apple //e programs to run. The Apple /// runs an operating system called SOS which is a precursor to Apple's Prodos. SOS contained directories and pathnames which was an improvement over Apple DOS 3.3. Users familiar with the Apple ][ will find operation of the /// confusing. It doesn't seem possible to swap disks without the machine complaining and all of the Apple ///'s hardware has to be configured with drivers and is referenced by a device name like .d1 or .d2 or .profile which can get tedious whereas the Apple ][ referenced hardware via slot numbers. The Apple was designed by a committee which had many different suggestions and ideas which made the short product development of the /// fragmented. The machine was discontinued with only ~100k built. By this time, the Macintosh was being introduced and had much more success in the business market.
